Start A Woodworking Business With Your Current Skill Set

It is the easiest to start a woodworking business doing the kind of jobs you are the best at. You work in woodworking categories that you are confident about doing well.

This is what starting with your current and existing woodworking skills is all about. No matter how small or specific your current talent is you can build upon it.

If you are a woodworking hobbyist and have finished some projects, you probably already know where your interest and skills lie. You can start by offering a specific service or project along those skills.

A woodworker can do hundreds of different kinds of projects. But a beginning with a specific kind of job will ensure that you only get the kind of work that you are good at doing.

As a beginner, you need to build a good reputation. For that you need to provide customer satisfaction right from the beginning. Starting a woodworking business in your comfort zone will enable you to finish tasks quicker and more efficiently while delivering quality work. Do not accept a woodworking job that you feel is beyond your capability. It may be matter of lack of proficiency, the required tools, time, right hardware or any other factors.

Don't Be Afraid To Seek Help

Whenever you are unsure of any woodworking project, get more information about it. It would be great if you could find a knowledgeable person to help you out. But there are also several great resources like books, do it yourself videos and guides on virtually every wood building subject.

When you research and study more about a particular project you will realize that there are more than one method of doing things. Many of the techniques and methods that you will read about are devised by highly skilled and professional woodworkers.

Feel free to learn from these methods as you do not always have to imitate the techniques of making a certain woodworking project exactly as you find it.

You can mold the instructions to suit your skill level, set of tools and even time constraint.  You can acquire wonderful knowledge from books, woodworking magazines, do-it-yourself videos, woodworking blogs and websites as well as furniture stores.

Examining the woodworking craft physically gives you a good idea of how the manufacturer might have made it.

Keep an Open Mind

Be open to the fact that whatever the method has been used originally, the project can be built differently as well.

For example, using simple joinery techniques rather than a more complicated one is an option.

A lot of professional plans and projects that you come across have been built using equipment that you might not have. They might use techniques that you are not confident about. You might also have the need to make an expensive woodcraft more affordable. Therefore, feel free to come up with your own method of building the same project by using different techniques, tools, material and even changing the design.

Build your own woodworking plan based on how you want and know how to make a particular woodworking project.

Having access to professional and accurate plans and blueprint for the project is very beneficial right from the start.

It gives you a great platform to start designing the project according to your own requirements. You can always simplify a woodworking project that has been built by other professionals as you see them in magazines and books. You can first try out the methods on small projects and the projects that you build for yourself.

In this manner you can ensure that your methods work and also give yourself the opportunity to become proficient at implementing your own designs and techniques.

Taking Your Skills To The Next Level

Are you someone with existing woodworking skills? Like a hobbyist or an amateur woodworker? If not, then you first need to start learning the skills from a reliable source.

"Do not try woodworking on your own if you don’t have prior experience. It can be dangerous and cause serious injury."

You need to learn under the supervision of another woodworker. You can get this training from another woodworker in your community who is willing to take you on as an apprentice.

The second great source of woodworking education are community colleges. They often run courses like this & at convenient times for people who might have jobs or other engagements during the day. You can find a great set of woodworking experts & teachers at these community colleges, and also get a chance to meet other wonderful people with same interest as yours.

The environment of going to a woodworking class can be engaging & inspiring, which is a great thing in any learning process.

If You Are a Hobbyist/Amateur Woodworker

If you are already somewhat versed with woodworking, you have 2 choices. Do what we just wrote about i.e. work as an apprentice or join a woodworking class to learn more.

Or, you can start experimenting, expanding & growing your skills yourself. With practice you can get good enough at making crafts you can sell.

Several amateur hobbyists are already skilled enough to sell the woodcrafts they make.

If You Are A Professional Woodworker

If you are already a professional woodworker then keep reading further. You will learn about some great woodworking resources that all woodworkers must have.

What Stuff To Make & Sell?

Make Your Own Products And Sell

We are partial towards making certain woodcrafts of choice & selling them yourself. Doing that gives you a great degree of freedom in your work. You can work at your own pace, & make the things that interest you. You also have the freedom of setting your own prices & profit margin.

The theory we like to propagate is that of a business model that thrives on making simple & yet high profit woodworking crafts. These woodcrafts can be anything really as long as they have the following characteristics:

  1. They are small crafts that are relatively simple to make.
  2. They can be made in quick time, ideally several pieces over a weekend.
  3. They are high selling & popular items.
  4. They have a history of being in demand. The cost of making is low.
  5. The selling price is relatively high & the profit margin is generous.
  6. They can be sold online & can be shipped with ease.
  7. These crafts also do not require many advanced & expensive tools either. You will earn more/hour of your work. Specially recommended for woodworkers who are just starting out.

Taking On Custom Woodworking Jobs

This is another way to go. Put out ads in the local newspaper, put out flyers or work on word my mouth recommendations.

If you have the skill & the tools to perform a set of woodworking jobs, you can. You should be ready to work with your customers, be ready to handle custom orders & take on orders that take a longer duration to finish.

You can start on a low key with custom woodworking jobs as well. For example, I read about someone who started out a woodworking business installing door & window frames because that’s what he had a lot of experience with. And he did get a lot of business as well, made a good income because they were all quick & fixed rate jobs.

Typically, custom wood working jobs are for professionals who are capable of handling all kinds of jobs. Read MORE about how to deal with customers here.
